Filibuster Frenzy Cartoon: Liisa Keskinen, Article: John Nickerson
The senate was rocked yesterday by the Y&G Republican filibuster on bill 103. This bill was an act to basically cut down on junk food for Montana students. It all started with an amendment to the rule saying a senator could not speak for more then two minutes during a speech in discussion. Once that had been passed the filibuster ensued with Josh Stevens compelling speech about tennis ball production and the early years of his lemonade stand. Josh Steven’s had a relatively short lived filibuster and despite the attempts of Senator Hooker, the filibuster was quickly shut down by opposing factors. However, due to the efforts of many members of the Republican Senate members’ long winded speeches, bill 103 did exceed its allowed time and with a motion made by Chanel Mumford it was tabled. In closing, the 2010 filibuster was a beaming success.
